Birmingham, the UK’s capital city of curry is now gripped with some of the best Indian eateries in the UK and can now boast some of the finest! So on that basis, let me introduce to you the newly opened Indico situated in the heart of the Mailbox, which will not disappoint!
As you walk in, it’s a mela (Indian for festival) of vibrant colours and pictures inspired from all across India to reflect its flamboyant culture and world class film industry. The staff were very friendly and automatically relax you when stepping into this Bollywood themed restaurant making you hungry before you sit down. The menu is simple but effective, which is the way it should be as we don’t have time with our busy schedules to go through pages and pages of dishes and sides which can be irritating at times!
The poppadoms and mango chutney, with achar (pickle) and mint yogurt dip was the perfect starter – the presentation was clean, eye catching and something a little different to the usual plate of poppadoms everyone shares from in other Indian restaurants.
We chose a selection of sensational main dishes including a Chicken Biriyani served in a clay pot which was balanced perfectly with spices and heat. Another main dish was the fish Khatti Meeti (sweet & sour) Fish Thaali – great if you love fish with a kick, packed full of flavour from Bombay and accompanied with a piping hot pot of creamy daal (lentil soup).
We were delighted to try a selection of Indian dishes in the form of a well balanced ‘thaali’ also known as an Indian platter. Chef’s special thaali was mouth watering and full of fresh meats, vegetables and homemade naan bread. This was definitely a feast for one, or two… if you feel like sharing. I personally loved the daal makhani and would say it was pretty close to what I make at home. The butter chicken was melt in the mouth and paneer makhanwala so soft and fresh.
Indian mocktails – now that was flavour! Packed full of fruits from India, flavours of ginger and spice, lemon and lime, there is something for everyone. Dessert – a sharing platter of gulab jamun (soft milk dumplings), gajar ka halwa (traditional carrot dish), mango and passion fruit sorbet and a chocolate brownie was the perfect finish to an amazing dining experience. Not only were they balanced to perfection, not overly sweet or sickly, each dessert complimented the other. I would personally recommend the Gajar Ka Halwa; grated carrots cooked and sweetened in condensed milk and served with panacotta ice-cream. A classic and not easy to find in many restaurants.
